51. How is Heat as a Service emerging in the European heating market?
Monday Oct 05, 2020
Monday Oct 05, 2020
In this episode, we look at Heat as a Service, which is emerging across the European heating market. The macro-trend from products to services can be seen across many different industries, and is now starting to pick up more momentum in the heating sector, causing disruption in the relatively conservative heating industry. Host Jon Slowe looks at the leading edge of some of this disruption from Denmark and Germany, from the perspective of Andreas Ballhausen, Managing Director of Viessmann Solutions and Services; Nicolai Kipp, Chief Consultant at Dansk Fjernvarme, and Delta-EE Heat as a Service expert, Roxanne Pieterse.

49. The role of policy and regulation in the energy transition
Monday Sep 21, 2020
Monday Sep 21, 2020
In this episode, we’re looking at the topic of regulation and the role it plays in the transition to new energy. Although many aspects of energy markets have been liberalised in many ways in many countries, energy is certainly not a completely free market. Regulation plays a critical role, both with competitive markets, and of course networks which are more heavily regulated as natural monopolies. Regulations – and the policies underpinning them – have, naturally, been built around ‘old energy’. It now needs to evolve and facilitate, even lead the transition to ‘new energy’. We are joined by Jan Rosenow, Director of European Programmes, Zsuzsanna Pató, Senior Advisor, and Richard Sedano, President and CEO, at Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP).

48. How utilities are re-inventing their digital infrastructures
Monday Jun 15, 2020
Monday Jun 15, 2020
In this episode we're going to look at how incumbent utilities are re-inventing their digital infrastructures in response to the many changes that are happening throughout the energy system and in customers’ homes. In response to these changes, how are utilities going about transforming the way they interact with customers and wholesale markets through the redevelopment of their CRM and billing systems, or new digital platforms to offer innovative services into the market? What are the main challenges they need to overcome? And what are the experiences to date? Andy Bradley, Delta-EE Director is standing in for Jon Slowe, talking to Wytse Kaastra, Managing Director of Accenture.

47. Selling stationary fuel cells
Monday Jun 08, 2020
Monday Jun 08, 2020
Stationary fuel cells generate electricity and heat from a single fuel source. Volume orders have not arrived, yet, although the market has been moving in a positive direction. Stand-in host Steven Ashurst, Principal Analyst at Delta-EE, discusses what has been learned from selling fuel cells so far, how they’re about more than just cogeneration, and what next steps the sector needs to take, with guests from two of Europe’s leading players – Alexander Dauensteiner, Product Line Owner Fuel Cells at Viessmann, and Mark Selby, Ceres Power CTO.

46. The challenge and opportunity for aggregators in the current climate
Tuesday Jun 02, 2020
Tuesday Jun 02, 2020
In the current crisis, balancing the electricity system has become more challenging. In some cases, we have seen high levels of renewable generation together with lower demand than normal, impacting both the local and national grids. Some markets have seen more frequent negative electricity prices or responded by procuring more ancillary services to support system balancing. Other markets, with less variable generation, have seen different challenges. In this episode, Jon Slowe is joined by two aggregators whose core business is about using demand side flexibility to help balance the electricity system. Jon is joined by Simon Bushell, CEO of Sympower, and Emeka Chukwureh, Director of International Strategy at Electricity Exchange.

Wednesday May 27, 2020
Wednesday May 27, 2020
In a world where energy is more distributed, more customer-centric, and more service-focused, energy insights will be at the heart of the relationship between customers and their energy retailers, or energy service providers. In this episode we're looking at what energy insights will be able to do for customers in Europe in the future, and how we’ll get there. We're joined by Håkan Ludvigson, CEO of Eliq, Ronald Root, Data Science Enabler at Eneco, and Delta-EE expert David Trevithick.

44. Fossil fuel incumbents and their journeys to new energy
Monday May 18, 2020
Monday May 18, 2020
Energy is still, globally, dominated by fossil fuels. Companies along the value chain – from fuel extraction through to fuel utilisation – are starting to move to new energy, at various paces. In this episode Jon Slowe is joined by Chris Goodall. Chris is a writer on the energy transition as well as a businessperson and investor in the green economy. His latest book ‘What We Need To Do Now’ puts forward an outline plan for the complete decarbonisation of the UK economy. Jon and Chris explore the impacts of the energy transition on the fossil fuel value chain, and compare and contrast how companies are responding.

42. Smart EV Charging
Tuesday May 05, 2020
Tuesday May 05, 2020
In this episode we're talking about charging electric vehicles (EVs), and specifically optimising when electric vehicles charge at home. Home is where most people, if they can, will charge their vehicles. Some people are already being smart about when they charge. And as EV sales keep increasing, companies in the electricity system value chain will want to avoid the impacts of everyone plugging in at the same time, and utilise the benefits that flexible charging can bring. Host Jon Slowe will be joined by Nick Woolley, CEO of ev.energy, Carsten Bruns, Managing Director at beegy, along with Delta-EE expert, William van der Byl.
